Word and Sentence Matching Games

All of these games may be played as individuals, in pairs or in groups of three or four.

The first game is a simple word→picture matching game, which can be played by children of all abilities.

Game One:

Print and laminate the following:

The picture cards and the word cards:

  • Cut out the word cards.
  • Learners take turns to match the words to the pictures.
Learners take turns to match the words to the pictures.

Game Two:

For variety – and especially valuable with learners who need a lot of reinforcement for effective learning – print, laminate and cut out words AND pictures.

Learners play in pairs.

  • Use only 5 picture cards with their 5 matching word cards.
  • One learner has picture cards and one has word cards, “shuffled” so that they are in random order.
  • The learners place the first card in their “pack” on the table simultaneously.
  • If the word matches the picture, the first player to shout “SNAP!” or “SAME!” is the winner and keeps that pair of cards.
  • The learners play until all the cards have been matched. Whoever has the most pairs is the winner.

Game Three – MEMORY Matching Game::

As above, print, laminate and cut out the words AND pictures.

Learners may play as individuals or in pairs, or groups of 3 or 4.

Place all of the cards face down on the table.

  • Each learner takes it in turns to lift two cards.
  • If he/she has picked up the correct word for the picture, he/she keeps that pair.
  • If not, she replaces the card, face down, in exactly the same place on the table and the next learner takes his turn.
  • When all of the pairs have been matched, whoever has the most pairs is the winner.

Game Four – Matching Words and Sentences:

Print and laminate the Words and Sentences.

Cut out the sentences. Use only as many words and sentences as suits the learners.

e.g. Learners may only be given three or four words and sentences to match.

Learners may work as individuals, in pairs or in groups of three or four.

(See the PHOTOGRAPH below.)

  • Learners take it in turns to read the words aloud.
  • A learner picks up a sentence card and reads it aloud.
  • She reads the words again and finds the word that is in the sentence she has picked up.
  • She places the sentence next to that word.

(REMEMBER – Only use two – four sentences and matching words to start with! This game can be played over and over again, adding more sentences and words.)

Learners match the sentences to a key word in that sentence.

Game Five – Matching Sentences with Sentences:

This game may be played as individual, in pairs or in groups of three or four.

Print and laminate two sentence cards – one on coloured card.

Cut out one set of sentence cards.

(See the PHOTOGRAPH below.)

  • Learners take it in turns to read the sentences aloud.
  • A learner picks up a sentence card and reads it aloud.
  • He reads the sentences aloud again (or the pair/group may read them together).
  • When he comes to the sentence matching his sentence strip, he places them together

(REMEMBER – Only use two – five sentences and matching words to start with! This game can be played over and over again, adding more sentences and words.)

Learners match sentences to sentences.

Game Six – Matching Pictures, Words and Sentences:

As for the games above, print and laminate the pictures, words and sentences.

(Or use the ones you have used for the previous games.)

Play as before, but match all three (pictures, words and sentences) as seen in the photograph below:

Learners match words to pictures and sentences to words!
