Sunrise Readers Book 1 Friends

Read, write, cut and match activities

The following  free downloadable exercises provide children with the opportunity to practise and consolidate their reading, writing and fine motor skills. Print on A4 paper.

These activities can be done once the learners have been taught to recognise, read and repeat the words in the Word List on the back cover, and when they have started reading the book. (They learn the sight words in advance of being given the book, with the teacher using flashcards in preparation for reading Sunrise Readers Book One – Friends. See the Teacher’s Manual for how to do this.)

  1. Read the sentence aloud, running a finger smoothly under the words, from left to right.
  2. Repeat – read the sentence aloud two or three times. If this is a class or group activity, the teachers can make the most of the worksheet as resource by saying, “Everybody, find this word _______ in the sentence, and point to it!”
  3. Write the sentence – the children will follow the dots to write the words. They are presumably still learning to recognise and write the letters.
  4. Read the sentence aloud again. Learners then cut out the last sentence as indicated, and jumble up the words. Match the words to the sentence above, covering each word with the correct cut out “flashcard” word.

Further tips:

Children can use the back of the page to draw and colour a picture that is relevant to the sentence.

Keep the cut-out flashcard words in an envelope stapled to the worksheet. The children can then do the matching exercise again.
